The cost of replacing an employee can be up to 30% of their annual salary. In the coffee industry, consistency is product quality. A revolving door of staff kills that consistency.
1. Create a path for growth
Don't let "barista" be the ceiling. Create tiers: Junior Barista, Senior Barista, Head of Training, Shift Lead. Clear criteria for promotion gives staff a reason to stay and improve.
2. Invest in Education
Pay for them to take SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) courses. When you invest in their skills, they feel valued and bring that expertise back to your shop. It turns a job into a career.
3. Flexible Scheduling
Burnout is real. Use software to ensure fair scheduling, respecting time-off requests and avoiding "clopening" (closing late and opening early) shifts whenever possible. Work-life balance is often more important than a minor pay bump.
